“Mani Darshan” is a commonly used visitor term for the early crystal-lingam darshan at Ramanathaswamy Temple. The current official English page calls it “Spatiga linga dharshan,” while the fee table uses “Spadigalinga Tharisanam.”

Why the names and spellings differ
Sphatika, Spatika, Spadika and the official page’s Spatiga or Spadigalinga are different English spellings used for the crystal lingam. Many pilgrims also know this early-morning observance as “Mani Darshan.”
This guide uses “Spatika Lingam Darshan” after this explanation. When speaking with the temple or a local guide, mention both that name and “Mani Darshan” so your intended darshan is clear.
The older Rameshwaram sacred context
The Skanda Purana, in the Brahma Khanda’s Setu Mahatmya, describes Sita’s sand lingam, Rama’s installation and the lingam brought from Kailasa by Hanuman. The Shiva Purana, in the Koti Rudra Samhita, also preserves the Rameshwaram worship narrative and praises abhishekam there with Ganga water.
These passages illuminate the sanctity of Rameshwaram. The temple’s living tradition gives the present Spatika Lingam Darshan its familiar name, form and early-morning timing.
What is known about the crystal lingam’s history
Stories are told about who gave or installed the present Spatika Lingam, but the Puranic passages named above do not settle that question. This guide therefore keeps to the history that can be supported by a clear temple record, inscription or named traditional source.
That care does not lessen the devotion with which the darshan is received. It honours the living temple tradition without presenting an uncertain story as fact.
